Attendance Policy
Purpose of this Policy
To ensure that students’ education and welfare are not harmed through lateness or absence.
To ensure that students are warned of the implications of lateness or absence.
To ensure that students, teachers, and UK School staff are aware of the required standards and procedures regarding attendance.
Attendance Monitoring
The UK School of English monitors student attendance. This is explained to both teachers and students during the Welcome Meeting, and students receive this information in their Student Handbook.
Class Times
Class times are displayed on the timetable in the Induction Pack.
All students are expected to attend every lesson. The school records the total number of hours each student attends.
Students should always arrive on time for lessons. If a student is more than 15 minutes late, they will be marked absent and should apologise to the teacher and explain the reason for their lateness.
Absence
Students must inform their class teacher in advance if they expect to be absent and provide a valid reason.
If a student is absent for more than 2 consecutive days without informing the school, the school will contact the student, their next of kin, or emergency contact, and issue a First Warning Letter.
If a student is absent for 4 consecutive days without a valid reason, a Second Warning Letter will be issued.
If a student is absent for a week without a valid reason, they will be terminated from the college.
Note:
Visa students must attend at least 85% of their lessons as a condition of their stay in the UK.
Holiday Requests
If a student wishes to take a holiday, including for religious reasons:
They must inform the school at least four weeks in advance.
Only full weeks can be taken as holiday, not individual days.
Fees are not refunded, but the missed weeks are added to the end of the course.
Termination Policy
The UK School of English values consistent and effective attendance monitoring to maintain its duty of care.
Attendance Expectations
A minimum of 85% attendance is required.
Falling below 85%, or taking 2 consecutive days off without a valid reason, will result in a First Warning Letter.
4 consecutive days of absence without a valid reason will result in a Second Warning Letter.
A week of absence without a valid reason will result in termination from the college.
Additional reasons for disciplinary action or termination include (but are not limited to):
Criminal acts
Sexual misconduct or relationship misconduct
Harassment or discrimination
Violating drug, alcohol, or tobacco policies
Theft or wilful damage of property
Complaints
Students should refer to the Student Handbook for full guidance on procedures relating to attendance and termination.
If students have concerns or complaints about these policies, they are encouraged to contact a member of staff at reception.
